The Santa Maria refinery during the 1980s........
Many of the people who began their careers at the refinery during the 1980s are still here today. They are the leaders who shape the processes and improvements that are integral to our business.
Together... Part of Something Great.
These refinery workers were around when a major fire and series of catastrophic explosions occurred at a Liquefied Petroleum Gas storage and distribution terminal in Mexico City in 1984. More than 500 people were killed, 7,000 injured and 200,000 people were evacuated. The terminal was destroyed. There was so much damage that the cause of the accident was never established. The Santa Maria refinery workers were on shift that day.
We recognize the path that was paved for us during the 1980s and appreciate the dedication of those before us.
United Steelworkers Local 534 would like to honor those union folks who worked at the refinery during the 1980s. Contact us today if you were employed here and have experiences you would like to share.
We are developing a detailed history of the Santa Maria refinery while many of the people who helped shape the history are still here. We look forward to hearing from you.
